Rice

1. Creative Lesson Plan on Rice: An absolute delight of a booklet developed by Development Research Communication & Services Centre (DRCSC) . It is  sixth in the series of creative lesson plans for teachers, educators and community workers. It focuses on investigating rice as food and its other uses, growing rice ecologically , meeting farmers and learning about the rice field ecosystem .The activities in this booklet include:

1.‘Making Rice Farming Calendar’ (Class 5 to 8):  based on children’s experiences, observations and conversations with local farmers. The calendar thus becomes basic information for learning about rice culture in their own locality.

2. ‘Cooked Rice, Puffed Rice, Flattened Rice ….. Investigating Various
Types of Rice and Rice Based Products’ (Class 5 to 8) : Looking at the types of rice and rice based products and their prices.

3. Let’s Grow Rice Organically ( Class 6 to 8): Attempting to grow rice in a big tub or bucket without using chemical fertilizer or pesticides.

4. ‘Rice Farming in our Village’ (Class 7 to 9): Getting a closer look at rice fields and recognizing the difference between the one in which chemicals have been used and an organic one.

At the end of the booklet there is a summary of rice varieties that have appeared in this booklet. There is a note by Ardhendu Chatterjee titled The Multiple Dimensions of Rice. In addition to these, there is a reference section that includes names of books and booklets on rice, Bengali books, websites and a list of lesson plans.
